Woodlawn Cultural Park Visitor Center and Museum

This project is a historic preservation/adaptive reuse of a 18th century Quaker barn and a carriage house, located in Woodlawn Cultural Park, for use as a museum and visitor center. All existing trees within the project area has been preserved. Encroachment of critical root zones was minimized to ensure the survival of existing trees. PELA staff, in collaboration with the architect and MNCPPC staff, prepared a site and grading plan that provides an additional pathway with universal accessibility to various destinations: the Barn/Museum, the Carriage House and the Barnyard. Sustainability is the guiding principle of the design. Site planning and construction document preparation were part of the scope of work. The landscape architectural design features include a grass meadow in the west, a stone seat wall south of the carriage house, native, drought tolerant low maintenance planting, a drinking fountain, trash/recycle receptacles, safety wood fencing, a tar and chips surfaced Barnyard for events and a tar and chips surfaced pathway system, wood screen fence, and wood bollards. PELA also collaborated with the project civil engineer to develop Environmental Site Design (ESD) strategies to fulfill MDE SWM requirements. Rain gardens and landscape infiltration strips are strategically located for SWM as well as aesthetic enhancement of the site. The construction of the project was completed in 2016. The project received a Design Excellence Citation in Open Space Category from MNCPPC.
